about
Between Jackson, MS and Hattiesburg, MS there is a metal cross scraping the sky in a all you can eat southern style buffet parking lot. I pass it all the time going to shows in south Mississippi and it always stays with me after that mile is gone. You see, I grew up in the pews listening to my Dad scream until he was red in the face about the message of the cross. There was a line he used to always say and it's stayed with me.
"The ground at Calvary is level."
Today in Mississippi our government does not share this sentiment. The recent House Bill 1523 to allow sellers to prohibit sales based on religious reasons, along with a mountain of other problems, shows where their hearts are. This does not represent the Mississippi me and others share and I'm tired of Phil Bryant and his friends claiming they speak for it.
I've been thinking a lot about that cross.
I've been thinking a lot about this state.
Whether it be Calvary or red clay I'm going to do my best to keep it level.
lyrics
A 110 feet
A 110 feet
A cross of metal and wires and steel beams
In a buffet parking lot
In a buffet parking lot
To guide to the lunch hour all those lost
22.5
Oh, 22.5
That's the percent under that poverty line
But don't be said
No, don't be said
Cause when you're up on capital hill it ain't half bad
So blame your devil, claim your martyr
Your good ole boys will guard you
From bad blood, from red clay as you do say
"Hospitality"
"Hospitality"
A sign it stands
A sign it stands
it says we don't serve folks not just like us man
Ain't they brave
Oh, ain't they saint
To put on that altar other right before they
The governor blames
The governor blames
Fanged tooth liberals, the president, and folks that are gay
He points to that cross
He points at that cross
He says, "This tower of Babel will guide those lost"
But blame your devil, claim your martyr
Your good ole boys will guard you
From bad blood, from red clay as you claim
"Hospitality"
"Hospitality"
I wanna thank you Phil
And I wanna thank you God
For this three dollar off buffet coupon
I'll use it well
You know I'll use it well
And when I leave this cross's glow I'll return to hell

"There’s a sad dive bar somewhere between heaven and hell and Rogers’ voice sounds like something you’d hear booming from the stage of that place. Shivery, deep, weathered.”
